What materials are used for climbing walls?
Source:
I. Main Stone Slab Materials
Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP / GFRP)
Composition: glass fiber + resin composite material.
Advantages: high impact resistance, excellent weatherability, waterproof and UV-resistant, acid- and alkali-resistant, long service life, and low maintenance costs.
Applicable to: professional training gyms, competition venues, and outdoor climbing walls.
Engineering plastics (such as high-density polyethylene HDPE and ABS)
Advantages: lightweight, excellent toughness, superior cushioning, a wide range of colors, high moldability, and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Applicable to: children’s climbing areas, schools, parent–child amusement parks, and leisure and entertainment venues.
Wood-based composite panels (such as multilayer birch plywood and marine-grade plywood)
Advantages: smooth and warm-to-the-touch surface, excellent shock absorption, comfortable feel, environmentally friendly with no odor.
Disadvantages: Poor moisture resistance; suitable only for dry indoor environments.
Applicable to: high-end indoor climbing gyms and home climbing walls.
Microcrystalline Stone Slab
Features: high density, ultra-high wear resistance, and extremely high compressive strength.
Applicable to: high-frequency outdoor scenic-area climbing walls.
II. Structure and Auxiliary Materials
Steel structural frame: Typically constructed from Q235B high-strength steel to ensure robust load-bearing capacity and excellent fatigue resistance.
Rock-point material
Aviation-grade polyurethane: comfortable grip, non-slip texture, and a coefficient of friction ≥ 1.1 in wet conditions.
Rubber, wood, and metal: used for routes of varying difficulty or to simulate outdoor textures.
Safety Protection Materials
Protective pads: typically 13 mm or thicker, priced at RMB 300–450 per square meter, and cover an area approximately 15 times the surface area of the rock wall.
Flooring materials: Wear-resistant and slip-resistant rubber or PVC flooring is recommended.

The Difference Between Rock Climbing and Bouldering
Although rock climbing and bouldering both fall under the umbrella of climbing, they differ significantly in terms of height, belaying methods, and equipment requirements. Bouldering typically refers to low-height, rope-free climbing, whereas “general” rock climbing—such as sport climbing—usually involves high-altitude climbing with rope protection.
